Wireless Networking Standards – Quick Glance

Here are some wireless networks you should be familiar with. Some of these are outdated, such as the 802.11b and 802.11a due to their limited capabilities. The 802.11a  ranges less than a 100 feet and it’s easily obstructed. You have to maintain a close proximity and clear line of sight for this to function well. Who wants to put up with that this days with the existence of 802.11n which is the standard?

802.11a

-Uses the 5GHfrequency

-Data rates up to 54Mbps

-Ranges less than a 100 feet and easily obstructed (you must maintain close proximity and clear line of sight)

802.11b

-Uses the 2.4GHz frequency

-Data rates up to 11Mbps

-Ranges less than a 300 feet outdoors and 100 feet indoors

802.11g

-Uses the 2.4GHz frequency

-Data rates up to 54Mbps

-Ranges less than a 300 feet outdoors and 100 feet indoors

802.11n

-Uses both the 2.4GHz and 5.4GHz frequencies

-Data rates up to 600Mbps – done in part with MIMO (Multiple In Multiple Out) Transmits and receives more than one signal at a time

-Ranges up to 1000 feet
